Bono is Glamour Woman of the Year 2016: Here’s Why
Bono was named Glamour Woman of the Year for 2016.
But, wait! Just in case you’re not aware, Bono is NOT a female. What’s wrong with this picture? In the words of Glamour magazine, “When a major male rock star who could do anything at all with his life decides to focus on the rights of women and girls worldwide — well, all that’s worth celebrating. We’re proud to name that rock star, Bono, our first Man of the Year.” He is the first man in its 36-year history to be honored alongside its annual Women of the Year list.
Bono – Glamour’s Woman of the year 2016
Glamour magazine has been the butt of jokes on social media for naming U2 frontman and humanitarian Bono on its Women of the Year list.
Yet, Bono’s unending work for women’s rights is the main reason; and, a good reason at that.
Bono noted that the battle needs to be fought by men as well as women.
Among the recipients, he joins US singer Gwen Stefani, American Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, and the three founders of Black Lives Matter. Others include International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, American pop star Zendaya, Italian designer Miuccia Prada, Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad and plus-size model Ashley Graham.
Poverty is Sexist
It’s a new campaign focused on helping the world’s poorest women through better access to education, health services, and business opportunities.
“Women bear the burdens of poverty,” Bono says. By establishing Poverty Is Sexist, Bono is making a powerful statement that men can, and should, take on these issues.

Before accepting the award, he sought counsel from his wife, Ali Hewson, on what he should say. She told me the same thing nearly 40 years ago: “Don’t look down at me. But don’t look up at me either. Look across to me. I’m here.”

The singer proceeded to say the following: “I’ll tell you the real reason that I’m here. It’s one of the tiny, few awards that caused excitement in our house and stopped the usual dinner conversation.
The next conversation stated that unless we address this problem, our world will continue down this misogynistic, violent and impoverished path.
Both women and men must work together in changing this, said the Glamour Woman Of The Year 2016. I say to the President-elect: look across to women, make equality a priority, it is the only way forward. The train is leaving the station, be on it or be under it.”
On Gender Equality
Bono admitted that men are largely responsible for the problem of gender inequality. Therefore, men need to be part of the solution. Speaking directly to those in high-profile public office, Bono stated, “We can do much more than we think we can.” If leaders don’t support women and girls, vote them out of office.”
