What You Need To Know About The Neogen Sunscreen

Are you heading off the beach this summer? Then, you better be sure to keep your skin protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Putting off products like Neogen Sunscreen will sure be helpful. But, what is this product all about? Does it really help keep our skin protected? Well, read on as we are sharing with you information about this Korean product, and more!

Summer is probably one our most awaited season.

It’s that time of the year when the sun shines up and the heat is on.

Do you imagine having your beach escapades – getting soaked up on the beach, wearing your favorite one piece or bikinis, and getting some sunbathing? Oh! How exciting and lovely, isn’t it?

There is really something about the beach that makes it so inviting. Like, seriously!

Anyway, while getting under the sun and having that sun-kissed skin is fun (regardless if it is summer time or on a regular day), with how global warming is changing our atmosphere, we better shape up and make sure we are well-protected from the harm caused by too much sun exposure.

And what better way to protect our skin but by putting on a product that will shield it from harm like the Neogen sunscreen.

Have you heard about this product yet?

If not, we are more than glad to share our product review with you as you read on.

But before we even get to that, let’s start from what we think is very essential. Knowing what sunscreen is all about and why we should always put some on our skin especially when under the heat of the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, sunscreen is a skincare product which ingredients help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from penetrating the skin.

There are two types of ultraviolet radiation that are considered harmful to the skin – the ultraviolet A (long-wave) and ultraviolet B (shortwave) rays. Too much exposure to these may lead to damaging the skin, aging it prematurely, and increasing your risk of getting skin cancer.

The ultraviolet B (shortwave) or UVB is said to be the main culprit behind the sun are said to be the reason behind the skin getting wrinkled, leathered, sagged, as well as other light-induced effects on aging. It also aggravates carcinogenic effects, thus being seen as one of the causes behind skin cancer.

There are various sunscreen products in the market today – they, however, differ in their ability to protect the skin against UVA and UVB rays. Although, there are some products that claim to protect your skin from both.

It is highly advised that people use sunscreen every day regardless if it is gloomy or sunny as long as you are exposed outside. You may not immediately notice its effect on your skin, but you will, eventually, in the long run. From time to time, you may reapply – depending on how much you are exposed to the sun, but normally, once a day is fine.

By the way, like any other products, sunscreens have expiration too! So whenever you buy one, do not forget to look for the expiration date. Although normally, sunscreen’s shelf life is up to two or three years. But if you are using it every day, your sunscreen will not last for years, for sure.

You have probably read this on the label of every sunscreen in the market, also in some lotion and face products. But we think it is also better for you to understand what SPF means.

Sun Protection Factor or SPF is defined as a qualified measure of how long does a sunscreen protects your skin from ultraviolet (UV) B and UVA rays. It is the one that blocks the UVB rays that may cause sunburn, and UVA that causes deeper skin damage.

The rule when it comes to finding the right SPF is – the higher, the better. However, it is good to note that none of these provide a 100% protection against UVB and UVA. For instance, SPF 30 provides approximately 96% protection only, while SPF 50 gives 98%.

Neogen Sunscreen has SPF 50.

Benefits of Sunscreen

Now that we already know what sunscreen is and what SPF is, you are probably thinking, why do we really need to put on sunscreen? Apart from getting protection against UVA and UVB, what else do we get from it?

Well, allow us to provide you a few more reasons why you should start putting sunscreen on your skin:

  1. It helps prevents your skin from premature aging.

Who doesn’t want to stay and look young, right? As much as possible, we want to retain our youthful glow. While we cannot prevent ourselves from getting old, we can at least help delay aging by taking necessary precautions. And one way to help our skin stay young looking, radiant and healthy is by putting on sunscreen.

  1. It helps lower the risk of skin cancer.

This is probably the most convincing reason for us. Nobody wants to get sick, right? Sunscreen is most helpful to those who are always under the heat of the sun. The more exposed you are to UVA and UVB rays, the higher your risk of getting skin cancer. So, better shield yourself from Big C as early as possible.

  1. It helps prevents sunburns.

Too much sun exposure can lead to getting sunburns, which if not treated properly may also lead to skin cancer. Sunburns weakens your skin. It may suffer from peeling, redness, hives, swelling, and itching because of sunburn. Prevent that from happening by putting on sunscreen like that of Neogen sunscreen especially since summer is coming up and you might go to the beaches.

  1. It helps prevent tanning.

If you want to go out, but doesn’t want to get tanned, putting on sunscreen will help you keep your skin protected from tanning. Just to give awareness, people thought that tanning is healthy. Actually, it is putting yourself to risk. Sunbathing to tan means getting too much UVB exposure, which as we have mentioned for so many times already is harmful to the skin and may cause serious problems later on.

  1. It helps keep the skin healthy.

By using sunscreen, your skin proteins like keratin, elastin, and collagen are protected. These proteins are the very reason behind healthy and smooth skin. Thus, if you want your skin to stay healthy, put some sunscreen now!

While there are a lot more benefits from using sunscreen, we will leave at these five major reasons apart, of course, from its main purpose of keeping your skin protected from harmful sun rays.

No wonder why we are here today – writing down our thoughts about this product after testing it ourselves.

Moving on, let’s do a more thorough review.

The Brand

Neogen originated from South Korea. The company was launched in 2009. They boast their products as made of all-natural ingredients using minimal processing. While most Koren skincare follows a multi-step routine, Neogen promotes a shorter skincare routine with a promise of better cosmetics created using biotechnology. They branded themselves as the leader of dermaceutical innovation in the Korean industry.

Based on the product label, Neogen Sunscreen is made of the following ingredients:

Water, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Zinc Oxide, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Hexanediol, Isoamyl P-Methoxycinnamate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Titanium Dioxide, Cetearyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Phyllanthus Emblica Fruit Extract, Rubus Idaeus(Raspberry) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Carbomer, Lippia Citriodora Leaf Extract, Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Angelica Archangelica Root Extract, Beta-Glucan, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Artemisia Absinthium Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Alumina, Gentiana Lutea Root Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil, Citrus Limon (“Lomon”) Fruit Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Cedrus Atlantica Wood Oil, Disodium Edta, Potassium Hydroxide, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis(Orange) Oil, Aluminum Stearate

Active Ingredients

While there the Neogen Sunscreen is composed of several ingredients, let us, in particular, tackle some of its active ingredients, which are the following:

  • Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate was once a controversial ingredient. It has been linked to being one of those product ingredients that are cancerous. However, that has been ruled out already and is now considered safe and has been approved for usage internationally.

  • Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine

Although the use of this ingredient has been approved in European countries for years, unfortunately, it’s not the same case in the United States of America. This ingredient is proven to help protect the skin from the full UVA range.

  • Zinc Oxide

Zinc Oxide is proven to be one of the safest and non-irritating sunscreens. It is also said to potentially promote antioxidant activity.

  • Titanium Dioxide

If you have sensitive skin or rosacea, then this sunscreen is ideal for you. It is also one of those ingredients considered as safe & least irritating.

Other Notable Ingredients

Apart from the above-mentioned active ingredients, Neogen Sunscreen also contains the following ingredients:

  • Alcohol

While this ingredient helps potentially in product absorption, the use of alcohol can cause dryness on the skin, as well as damage on the outer layer of the skin if used in high doses.

  • Glycerin

Glycerin is proven to help repair the outer skin barrier. It also helps soften the skin so that the other ingredients of the product can easily penetrate the skin.

  • Hylauronic Acid

Neogen Sunscreen has one of the highest rated forms of hylauronic acid. This ingredient is considered as a superb ingredient as it attracts water and has binding capabilities.

  • Botanical Extracts

Neogen Sunscreen contains 19 botanical extracts and oils. However, the choices of botanical extracts and oils for this product are not quite impressive.

Five botanical extracts used in the production of Neogen are known for their fragrance properties. While for some there is totally nothing wrong about it, for those who have sensitive skin, they might encounter some problems as it contains some ingredients that are considered as skin irritants, which include lavender and citrus oils

Three other botanicals are considered as astringents, which is not entirely bad as it means it is good for those with acne-prone skin. However, using this product may be a struggle for those with dry or dehydrated skin types.

Among the 19 botanicals and oils, there are only two notable anti-inflammatories, which is quite a disappointment.

The product is white in color. It is lightweight that when you put it on the skin, it feels smooth and dewy. It may be categorized as a fluid type of sunscreen, but Neogen is not that watery at all. What we also notice is that although it has high oil content, the formulation does not separate.

Technically, the product does not include any artificial fragrance. However, it does contain fragrant botanical oils. It smells light and immediately dissipates once applied.

The Neogen Sunscreen comes in a silicone squeeze tube. The packaging is notably made of thinner and cheaper materials compared to other sunscreens in the market.

Neogen Sunscreen is available widely in the online community. We spotted it on Amazon for $30. However, it’s on sale at the moment for only $19. In other sites, it costs $20.06 for a 50ml product. We must say, it’s quite pricey that it’s almost at the price range of popular sun care brands.

How to Use

Neogen is easy to use. Just like any other sunscreen, all you have to do is squeeze a dime-sized amount of the product into your fingers, and gently apply it into your face and neck. Avoid making product contact in the eye. Otherwise, immediately rinse with water. You may re-apply as needed during the day.

Overall Performance

Initially, we had a great time using the product. It seemed to deliver what it has promised. It was indeed lightweight with its thin consistency, which is actually good because it absorbed into the skin faster than you think. It has a luminous finish that will make you feel like you one of those K-Pop stars you see on television.

However, the feeling changed as the days went by. We eventually had issues on clogged pores and whiteheads. To ensure that we are not making a mistake, we stopped for a couple of days for our skin to rest and rejuvenate. After a few days, we tried using Neogen again, and apparently, we were proven right with our initial thought.

We also tried it with makeup on, hoping for a better outcome. However, with so much oil content, we had to put on powder for a couple of times to help minimize the oily finish.

But, you should not judge the product based on our experience. We believe we have different skin types. Maybe it just didn’t work for some of us, but for others, it may have worked! Still, it is for you to decide whether or not we are right with our judgment.

By now you are probably overwhelmed with all the information we shared – from what sunscreen is all about, how beneficial it is to our health especially to our skin, what SPF is and what it does to our skin, up to our main point, our review on the Neogen Sunscreen.

Allow us to make two points in conclusion:

First, sunscreen is important. It is essential. You know, these days, global warming has really taken its effects. We already are feeling it. In fact, we can now feel the difference between the sun’s heat before and how it is today. No doubt, times and our environment is changing.

Thus, it is better to make the necessary precautions. And what better way to do that than putting on sunscreen or sunblock like the Neogen Sunscreen. It makes a lot of difference. You and your skin will thank your effort of starting taking care of yourself today.

Second, regarding Neogen Sunscreen, while we find it really expensive compared to other sunscreens in the market, we believe it is serving its purpose. Again, not because it did not sit well with us, means it won’t on you. At the end of the day, how a product affects its consumer depends on the one using it. We are all created unique – that means even our skin conditions are different. So what works for one may or may not work for the other. But overall, again, we believe it serves its purpose – that is to help keep the skin protected from the sun’s harmful rays.

So that’s it! I hope you learned something and that our Neogen Sunscreen review helped you gauge whether or not it is worth trying out on your skin.
