Fashion Sense: Mothers vs. Daughters

Style and Wellness

Fashion Sense United: Mothers and Daughters

I think it’s safe to say that mothers and daughters greatly differ in their fashion sense and style. No matter what your age, the variation between generations seriously vary.

If you are in your mid-forties, you’ll remember the 80’s very well (and maybe cringe a bit). That might not match your twenty-year-old daughter’s memory of fashion sense.

It’s important to know that some clothes in a forty-year-old mother’s wardrobe can be shared with their twenty-year-old daughters. Of course, it all depends on the style.

These days, almost anything that used to be considered inappropriate no longer applies in fashion sense.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]I’m specifically speaking of the archaic ways women from the older generation used to follow – no white before memorial day or after labor day, shoes and handbags should always match, and the dreaded pantyhose.[/perfectpullquote]

Of course, I’m not knocking anyone for wearing them, but it used to be a big no-no if you didn’t. One exception is colorful tights. Those who like to sport dresses or skirts in the winter, tights can not only keep you warm, but will show off your sense of style

What You Need to Know

When delving into the beauty styling business, it’s important to know what to educate people about. Believe it or not, some women still follow what they’ve learned while growing up, and it’s become ingrained in their thinking.

You, the stylist, can inform women about the changes in trends.

You’ll be viewed as an expert because of your status in the beauty business, and chances are they’ll listen to you.

But, keep in mind, some older generations just cannot conform; i.e. my mother, a seventy-something woman. She refuses to buy handbags in any color other than black. She just can’t see that many different colors, or even prints, enhance your outfit dramatically. I’ve tried until I was blue in the face, but she was adamant.

There are several categories to remember when it comes to your wardrobe. What you choose to buy should depend on why you’re buying it. Think of business clothes, casual clothing, formal events, or even lounging around the house.

Are there rules in fashion?

When it comes to fashion today, women have endless possibilities, and there are no longer so-called “rules” to abide by like I mentioned in my mother’s generations. You have the freedom to customize your clothes that match your identity. But there are, of course, opinions and stipulations.

Twenty-somethings never wear pantyhose as they are big-time passe. With self-tanners available, you can make your skin look like you’re wearing hose. If you’re fair all over, that’s still okay. What you don’t want to do is have your legs not match the color of the rest of your skin. It looks ridiculous. It can be compared to the makeup on your face. So many wear darker foundation that doesn’t match their neck with a clear line of demarcation.

Older generations refuse to go anywhere without pantyhose for several reasons; covering up veins is the most popular reason. Others just feel it’s not lady-like. Seriously? However, when I mention pantyhose, I should clarify. I remember years ago having to wear pantyhose with everything, and when I did, I’d spend the day pulling them up because kept sliding down. I mean ALL DAY long.

But tights are in a category of their own. Tights are trendy and fashion forward for the cooler months. Wear them with dresses or skirts with tall boots and you are looking mighty fine

A New Beginning for Fashion Sense

My mother taught me to never wear white during certain times of the year. Really? It was a notion that was passed down through the generations and nobody questioned it. The opposite of this is true. Women actually look cool and sassy wearing white in winter. Think of a skier who wears a completely white snowsuit. How fabulous does that look? That’s where the term “snow bunny” became popular.

Handbags and shoes should make your outfit pop.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]It’s very fashion forward. No more bland, neutral colors or head-to-toe mono-color looks. For example, wearing your basic black outfit should be complemented by a very colorful or even printed classy handbag. The different colors in the printed handbag can be accented by any color shoes that complement the bag.[/perfectpullquote]

I never buy black handbags. NEVER. Even with formal handbags, I’ll try to find a color and bag appropriate for the event. Now, I’m not telling you to never buy a black handbag. Just remember that you can personalize your look.

What about those full skirts with polka dots or other designs on them?  Do you remember those from the movie Grease? I sure do, and they’re back in a huge way. There are all kinds of them now – including printed, solid colors, all colors of polka dots, and floral options. They are different, cute, cool and sassy all rolled up in a neat little package.

There are not only skirts available, but dresses with the same print throughout that look fabulous like the picture below.

The message I hope you take away is that you have endless possibilities in fashion to choose from, which will help you customize your fashion forward style that you are comfortable with. Remember, Charlie stylists are always here to lend you advice and support when it comes to fashion sense.
