Hello, all beauty stylists and fashion gurus! I’d like to share an interview that I conducted with a true fashionista. Her name is Kim, and she’s all about style and fashion. She travels the globe searching for fashions and accessories to add to her existing vast, diverse wardrobe.
Whenever Kim goes out of the house, she is meticulously put together with accessories, makeup and jewelry to be envious of – making her a true fashionista. Her passion for all things fashion-related started in high school, and it hasn’t let up. Now that she’s a bit older, she tends to shop more of the classics that will never go out of style. Let’s get some insight from her perspective regarding all things fashion!
Our Fashionista, Kim Lussi
I’ll start off with your typical, easy questions about colors and different items in her wardrobe, and move forward delving into the nuts and bolts of being a fashionista.
Me: Let’s begin with a very easy question. How old are you?
Kim: Ugh. I will be 46 years year old next month on the 28th.
Me: Well, you look like you’re in your early 30s. What are your favorite colors and why?
Kim: Ha! Thank you. I love the color pink because it’s feminine and soft. However, in terms of clothing, I love black and white specifically worn together. Very classy and slenderizing. Another color I love is a deep burgundy or maroon. I have a burgundy leather jacket with shoes to match. I saw it in a store, and I couldn’t resist!
Me: That’s funny, we share the same taste in colors. What is your occupation?
Kim: I’m a teacher at a private elementary school.
Me: What attributes best describe your personality?
Kim: I don’t know. I hate these kinds of questions. I’m just not good at it. If I have to answer, I’ll say generous, easygoing, patient, congenial, laid-back and outwardly fashion forward.
Me: That wasn’t so hard, was it? Do you consider yourself a confident person? It sounds like you are.
Kim: There are a lot of things I’m confident in doing, yet probably more things I’m not confident about. Like, I could never speak in front of a crowd. Unlike my mother, I don’t start arguments with others. What I mean is, if she feels she’s not being treated right or has a strong opinion about something, she’ll express her feelings without a problem or a filter for that matter. She states whatever is on her mind. It’s sometimes embarrassing.
Me: It sounds like she is very confident! How does fashion affect your life?
Kim: I guess it makes me feel good. It has me in the poor house! I was brought up with a very fashionable mother. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had expensive taste. I love reading fashion magazines. It’s an escape and a pastime for me.
Me: Do you travel a lot?
Kim: I do travel a lot within the U.S. and out of the country. I’ve been to Europe, Dubai, Mexico, Pakistan, Canada, Caribbean islands and probably every state along the eastern coast and the midwest. Every trip I go on, I have to check out the local stores. I always come home with much more than I bring.
Me: How often do you purchase a new item of clothing/accessory (bags etc)?
Kim: Honestly, I go shopping nearly every day. There are times that I don’t buy anything – I just like to browse.
Me: How much would you usually spend per month on clothing and accessories?
Kim: I couldn’t even begin to figure that out. I do know my credit cards are sky high. They’re just so easy to use. Then, the bills come, and I swear I’m going to cut down on shopping, yet I never do.
Me: Where do you usually get inspiration for new purchases?
Kim: I do read a lot of fashion magazines, and I often critique the outfits. Some I find to be outrageous, but others I do like. When it comes to inspiration, nothing specific inspires me. If I see something I like, I buy it. I don’t need a reason to shop (laughing)!
Me: What time of the year do you spend the most on clothing and accessories?
Kim: No particular time of year. I’ll shop in a snowstorm or if it’s 100 degrees out. It really doesn’t matter. There are clothes in my closet that still have the tags on them. I’m never in need of a new outfit. I think I’m addicted to shopping!
Me: What are your 2 main criteria when purchasing clothing?
Kim: If they fit, and if they look good. That’s it. If the clothes don’t meet those criteria, what’s the point? It has to wash nice and be made of sturdy material so that it will last.
Me: Are your purchases usually planned or spur of the moment?
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] I think you can tell from my previous answers. I purchase new clothing and beauty products whenever.[/perfectpullquote]
Me: When purchasing a new item, do you buy a matching outfit item? (shoes, hat, bag, coat)
Kim: I do like to match my accessories, but they don’t necessarily need to be a perfect match. I play around with different tones and colors.
Me: Who do you mainly shop with?
Kim: My mother and my daughter are pretty much always with me. We shop most of the time together, and they’re brutally honest about their feedback on certain items. They’ll tell me straight out if something looks “awful” on me.
Me: Are you interested in celebrities’ fashion labels?
Kim: I like to take notice of what they wear, but it always goes back to if I like it or not. What looks good on certain celebrities, I know I may not be able to pull off. It doesn’t have to have a particular label on it.
Me: What would encourage you to try out new fashion and style?
Kim: I’ll try out almost anything, again, as long as I like it and it looks good. Sometimes things look terrible on the hanger but look great on and vice versa. So, I’ll try on pretty much anything.

Me: What type of accessories dominates your wardrobe?
Kim: Definitely shoes and handbags. Oh, and beauty products. I probably have over 100 pairs of shoes and handbags that I have no room for. The skincare products and makeup – I’ll stick to one brand for a while, but then I try out other brands. I also try things that my friends suggest to me.
Me: What would your dream outfit look like?
Kim: I don’t really have one. It’s weird, because I just buy what I like, so I have everything I want.
Me: Which famous celebrity fashionista would you say you look up to in terms of style?
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]I think Susan Lucci is very stylish. I’ve always been crazy about her and her style. She wears everything perfectly and always looks put together.[/perfectpullquote]
Me: What type of shoes catches your eye?
Kim: Ballerina flats and boots. I like heels once in awhile, but I gravitate towards wedges over heels.
Me: So if you were to win a closet makeover from 5 of your favorite stores, which ones would that be?
Kim: I would have to say White House Black Market, Coach, Cache in Atlantic City, All Saints in Washington D.C. and Nordstrom’s.
Me: What’s YOUR interpretation of the black pump?
Kim: Leather high heel with a pointed toe.
Me: How would you describe your overall fashion style? Classic, Trendy or Creative?
Kim: That’s an easy one. Definitely classic.
