I have big dreams! I always see myself achieving them one by one before I reach my 40th birthday. But, the reality is, there are times when I feel too exhausted and lazy to get to work. I don’t like the feeling as it might delay achieving my goals. So, I searched for ways on how to avoid procrastination and laziness and I thought of sharing these with you.
I understand that our bodies and minds are not limitless. From time to time it will get tired of it will get too overwhelmed, which causes procrastination and laziness. But, when you have a goal, and you want it done as soon as possible, you will find ways on how to avoid procrastination and laziness. That’s what exactly happened to me.
I remember attending a weekend workshop where we were given an introductory exercise. You know, those get-to-know-each-other-exercises that you participate in so as not to appear rude and anti-social. The goal of the exercise was to ferret out the habits that were most common to all of us. Turned out that on the subject of reaching our goals, each one of us had suffered from crippling procrastination at one stage of our life or our entire lives. It also turns out that it’s common for the general population. Most of us (struggle) with this. But what isn’t common is realizing that it isn’t procrastination alone that stops us from taking action on our goals, but laziness as well.
Laziness and Procrastination
When we set out to accomplish a goal, we are full of fuel and energy. If we’re smart about it, we may even make space in our lives, set a schedule, and tell people who can hold us accountable. These are all great steps towards getting us going and building momentum. So what happens between setting those steps and the actual doing?
Why is it that we put off taking action for hours, days, even weeks? Then one day we wake up and realize “oh, crap. It’s been months and I’ve done mostly nothing towards making it happen.” Sound familiar? When you realize this, you’ll start thinking that the problem is the lack of motivation. So you start trying some motivational, books, programs, magazines. You start to think that you don’t have discipline. Then, you start doing things like forcing yourself to just be focused and do it. But later on, you realize that one of these works, and it just adds to feelings of frustration about not making progress.
Then, you suddenly grasp the thought that maybe it or it may not be all blamed to procrastination but laziness too. You could not focus because you feel lazy. No matter how much you try to stretch your body and mind, it wouldn’t work because you feel idle.
But what’s wrong with being lazy? Don’t you just have to muscle through it?
There’s only so much you can do before you quit. Of course, even things you do that seem engaging to you will have their aspects and days that feel difficult. This is life. It’s just set up that way. But as long as the feeling of engagement is bigger than the feeling of disinterest or laziness, you’re probably on the right track. You have to expect that there will be days where you are significantly less interested in taking action.
So, here comes taking action. Of course, you don’t want to get stuck into it, right? You got to fight these feelings and keep your eye on the goal. You find ways on how to avoid procrastination and laziness to keep going.
But before that, take a look at your goal first. Ask yourself if it is just an in-season goal or it’s really something you have been aspiring since you don’t even remember when? Why do you want to accomplish it? Unless you come up with a deep, clear answer, say deuces to it and keep going.

How to Avoid Procrastination and Laziness
- Spend your day’s first 30 minutes doing your work. Avoid procrastination and laziness by starting your day right. Usually, especially in this time and age, we start the day by checking our Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites first. Without you even knowing, you already spent an hour or two by just checking your friends’ whereabouts or stalking your favorite celebrity. Stay focus. Start your day right by getting at least a quarter or half of your work for the day done.
- Schedule a 5-10 minute daily review. The idea is to make sure you know what you are up to for the day. Check your plans for the daily or the tasks you should accomplish for the day. Doing so, you keep your focus. This session may look very simple but is actually vital in keeping a daily structure for you. This way it will help you stay away from the temptations of procrastination and laziness.
- Stay away from distractions. Start by identifying what your distractions are. It can be social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or whatever. Once you have identified them, you make a move to keep yourself away from them. If it’s social media, for instance, then drop your phone. Put it inside your bag or if you really need it, then, maybe disable or uninstall them until you’re done with your goals. You got to do some little sacrifices at times, you know.
- Set aside what you can’t do for the moment. One way on how to avoid procrastination and laziness is to abandon or stay away from whatever it is that you feel lazy or procrastinated about. Yes, you can abandon a task for now and just the do it later on. I guess that is precisely the reason why the word later was invented. So, at times you can no longer function because you feel procrastinated or lazy, you can set that aside first and just get back to it when you are ready.
Although, some can scratch the goal off their to-do list entirely if they realized it wasn’t something they really wanted or needed, anyway. When the laziness sets in and I realize I’m working towards something that doesn’t even fit with my deepest desires, guess what I do? I ditch it. No feelings of guilt, no beating myself up. I just move on. And that’s a great feeling. Maybe I’ll teach a workshop about this, with an introductory exercise for the participants. Someday. Maybe.
Then again, if you think it is something that you really want but laziness or procrastination hinder you towards it, you can set it aside for now and get to it once you’re good.
- Delegate tasks. Do not be afraid to ask help from other people or to trust other people to do a part of the tasks. Trust me, it will make life easier and helps to achieve your goal faster. Learn to trust in the capabilities of other people.
- Be aware of yourself. Self-awareness is the key to avoiding procrastination and laziness. You should know your strengths and weaknesses. You should know what keeps you focused and inspired and what distracts you. When you know that yourself, it’s easier to counter the temptations of procrastination and laziness.
- Embrace your imperfections. Nobody is perfect. You have your flaws. It’s not always the best day or the perfect day of your life. Well, generally speaking, no one and no life is perfect. There are good days, there are bad days. You just have to deal with it accordingly.
- Take a time out. Yes, you got to relax. Procrastination and laziness are sometimes your body’s way of telling you that you need a break. Maybe you are just too exhausted and need to refresh. So, yeah, go ahead. Head on to the beach or somewhere you feel like going.
- Keep Re-starting. Even if you’re in love with the process, buzzing along, taking steps to reach your goal, there may still be things that crop up to stop you. That’s life, right? The key is to get back on track.
The more time you spend beating yourself up about not taking action, the further you are from reaching your goal. I don’t think though that inaction is a negative step. It’s just not taking action. But berating yourself about it, talking on the phone with friends about how you feel like such a slacker, wearing the term procrastinator like it is some sort of a badge of honor, these are all negative steps. You’re going backward. Stop. And get back in the game. Just make the decision and re-start.
You can get to these goals in a way that feels more engaging. In a way that you’ll actually wake up and do the work. Step by step to get there. This doesn’t mean that it will always feel like sunshine and roses. There are going to be days when it doesn’t feel engaging or good or even mildly tolerable. This is life. These days should be less frequent than the opposite end of the spectrum, though. The key is to keep restarting.
