Are you looking for ways to earning money while working at home? Well, if you do, there are so many online tutoring jobs out there that will allow you to earn extra income either for you and your family. In fact, it is becoming one of the most sought after online, work-from-home jobs to date.
Whether you are a stay-at-home mom who wants to earn extra bucks, a fresh graduate who is yet to find a regular day job, or someone who have already decided to try his or her luck working as a freelancer or a contractor, there is a sure place for you in the online tutoring jobs industry.
I once was a regular employee in a well-known international company, but things changed when I got pregnant and gave birth to our child. Initially, I planned to continue my day job, but as they say, life has its little surprises – and one of them is me deciding to become a fulltime mom.
When I made that decision, I knew I can’t manage to live a day without working. So, I started talking to fellow stay-at-home moms who happen to be my friends too about how they manage their everyday life – I mean, how they make use of their spare times. You know, when the baby is asleep and all the house chores are done. Guess what I learned? Almost all of them resorted to online jobs particularly online tutoring jobs.
I got so excited about it, I researched and made myself well-aware about the industry and how it goes. I then talked about it to my husband. I had to tell him I wanted to work from home. Ever the supportive husband that he is, he agreed and pushed me to do so. You know, it pays to have a very supportive husband. Really!
The moment I got his go signal, I started fixing my resume (because some online tutoring companies may ask for it), and then I started checking out the popular online tutoring websites. I tell you, I made sure I did my assignment – I researched and checked reviews about the companies first before applying. Of course, I had to make sure I am getting myself into the right team, or my daily schedule might suffer.
Anyway, fast-forward, a couple of months now since I started working as an online tutor and I must say it is very fulfilling. I actually love the fact that I discovered more about myself. To be honest, I came from a different industry. It was me taking a leap of faith into teaching. But guess what!? I did enjoy it, and I loved the perks. But more than anything else, I love the fact that I am able to earn my own money and get to help my husband pay the bills (oh! And got to do some shopping for him, our kid, and of course, myself).
So, without further talk, having had the experience and the joy of getting into online tutoring, I am sharing with you today how to make money from online tutoring jobs. But first of all, let me share with you some basic facts about the online tutoring world.
WHAT IS ONLINE TUTORING?
I guess the term is very self-explanatory, but just to define the job, online tutoring is basically living the usual in-person, face-to-face online tutoring. The only and probably the big difference is, you are doing it virtually, which basically means, you can tutor someone even if you are miles apart or even if he or she is from another part of the world.
Online tutoring caters mostly to kids, but there are also online tutoring websites that cater to adults and professionals.
As an online tutor, you can opt to teach your line of expertise. Meaning, if you are good at math, then you can teach math. If you are a god in science and technology, you can focus on that. It really depends on what you feel you are most good at. However, one of the most famous and very competitive subject matter when it comes to online teaching is English. This is actually where a lot of opportunities come from. In fact, most of the online tutoring websites I know (including where my friends a reworking) are specifically catering to kids, adults, and professionals who wants to learn the English language. If I may say, English teaching or tutoring is actually the most competitive of all.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET INTO ONLINE TUTORING JOBS?
To become an online tutor, of course, you have to have the drive and the passion to teach kids and adults alike. You have to be dedicated, and you have to have the time to teach (of course!).
To be honest, the requirements differ from one online tutoring company to another. There are companies that are very strict with a college degree (whether in related to teaching field or whatever as long as you hold a degree), while others are not very keen about that.
However, below are probably some of the most common requirements among all online tutoring companies:
- A reliable laptop or desktop computer
- A very fast and steady Internet connection
- A very good headset with Microphone (I recommend using one with noise cancellation feature to avoid distracting the person on the other line or your student)
- A high-quality webcam (if your laptop does not have a built-in cam or for those using a desktop computer)
- A Skype software installed for online chats with your students (this is optional as some, if not most, online tutoring websites have their own downloadable online tutoring application or software)
If you really want to pursue an online tutoring job, we highly recommend you invest in acquiring the above-mentioned requirements. It pays to have the best equipment especially if you are foreseeing working as an online tutor for a long time.
In addition, I suggest you set up your own home office, wherein you can do classes. Make sure to pick one that is away from the noise and other possible distractions.
WHY WORK AS AN ONLINE TUTOR?
Earlier I mentioned the perks of being an online tutor, and those basically are the very reasons why you should work as an online tutor!
Just to be more concrete, here are some of what I believe are the come-ons on online tutoring:
– Flexible Schedule
Who does not want working in a flexible schedule, right!? Everybody loves that, in fact! There is actually a report that says a lot of American working people have transitioned from working on a day job to working from home over the past years. Well, I am quite not surprised about it because ever since I started working online, I actually thought, why did I only learn about it now!? I mean, there are so many opportunities online, and most of these allow you to work at your own time and pace.
As a mom, I have to say that this is what I love most among the many reasons why you should consider working as an online teacher.
– Competitive Salary
Later on, I will discuss how much you will get to earn as an online tutor. But I have to say, with what it offers, it’s definitely fair and very competitive. To be honest, I believe that when it comes to online tutoring, it is all about finding the right company to work for, and finding the right client or students. If you have both, it’s like winning a lottery jackpot.
– Opens a Lot of Opportunities
Remember I told you that I am really not from the teaching industry, yet, here I am working as one. Online tutoring opened up a lot of opportunities for me. Opportunity to get to know me more, opportunity to teach, opportunity to earn and make money for my family, and opportunity to learn. Needless to say, it has given me the opportunity to widen my network through the people/students I teach.
– You Get to Share Your Expertise
As a tutor, I have to say that it is indeed one of the noblest jobs in the world. Why? Because you get to help someone by teaching, and that you get to share your knowledge and expertise to someone who needs it. It is very fulfilling knowing every after each session, your student gets to learn something new or have a deeper understanding of the subject matter. I tell you, it really does feel good!
HOW MUCH DOES AN ONLINE TUTOR MAKE?
How much you can earn as an online tutor really depends on the company that you belong to. Every online teaching website or company have their own payment and benefits packages. So, you just have to really choose wisely.
But to give you an idea, most online tutoring jobs allow you to earn between $10 and $40 per hour. Definitely, it is a very good way to earn extra money.
Later on, I will be sharing some of the best sites that really pay well to serve as your reference.
HOW TO MAKE MONEY THROUGH ONLINE TUTORING JOBS?
From what I have experienced, and also from what my friends have shared with me, having an academic background as well as teaching qualifications is a big advantage. In fact, having these allows you to earn more than your competitors (meaning, your fellow online tutors).
My educational background is not related to teaching, so what I did, as part of my strategy, as I worked first to an online teaching company that is not very strict with the requirements just to get to familiarize myself with how it works. When I was confident about my teaching skills already, I looked and applied to another company and asked for higher pay, which fortunately was granted to me.
As part of my plans, I will take an English expertise test soon to add to my credentials. That way, I can move up the ladder and earn more! Well, let us not be hypocrites. Who doesn’t want to earn more money, right?
Now, if you are a newbie or just planning to pursue online tutoring, I tell you, do not get overwhelmed or be scared. This industry offers a lot. Like what I did, if you do not have a teaching background, you can always start from 0 and then take a step higher as you go on. Eventually, you will get there and earn more.
Earning money and aiming for more teaching qualification is good driving force but from what I have experienced so far, having a good relationship with your student and their parents (if you are teaching minors) is also a good way to earn more. Why? Because feedback is essential. Most online tutoring companies base their compensation and bonuses on parents’ and students’ feedback.
Another tip if you want to make more money doing online tutoring jobs is to accept more classes as much as you can. Here’s the thing, online tutoring is very flexible when it comes to the working schedule. As an online tutor, you get to decide what classes you are to take and which ones you are going to let go. But how much you earn depends on how many classes you take. So yeah, the more classes, the more you get to earn, the better.
By the way, online tutoring companies have what they call as peak hours, which basically means there is a huge amount of students available for those certain hours, and that they highly recommend getting classes during those hours because they pay more. These hours though are usually the unlikely hours (like for instance, if you are working for a company that caters to Asian students, peak hours are usually early to mid-morning EST).
I think the most important of all if you want to make or earn more money as an online tutor is to be with the right company. With that said, here are some of the best online tutoring companies that really pay well:
Tutor.com is one of the most popular and considered as one of the best online tutorial websites today. It’s a platform that connects the right tutors to students and vice versa.
Tutor.com is open to anyone with their respective expertise. It is open for anyone who is able to teach academic subjects like Calculus, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, English, and so much more. If you got what it takes to be one, you can definitely take advantage of this online tutoring platform.
Tutor.com pays its online tutors on an hourly basis. At a minimum, you are expected to do classes five hours a week, which is very attainable, right?
How much you earn depends on the subject you teach. But to give you an idea, you can expect to earn between $10 and $50 per hour. Very reasonable, right?
If you are someone who does not have experience in online teaching, well, Cambly is one company you may consider working for. They do not necessarily require previous tutoring experience to get you into the job.
Just so you know, Cambly is known as an ESL website wherein students are taught the English language.
To be a Cambly online tutor, all you have to do is sign up and use their app to tutor students. Yes, you read it right. Camby has an app that lets you tutor and communicates with your students wherever you are by simply using your mobile devices. The app also helps track the time you spent teaching online.
An a Cambly online tutor, you get to earn 17 cents per minute, which makes it around $10.20 per hour. Unlike other websites, they pay their teachers on a weekly basis.
As the first on our list, Chegg is also considered as one of the most popular platforms that offer online tutoring jobs.
Chegg is also one of those sites that require their tutors to have or at least be running a degree program.
The application process on Chegg may be a little tedious but definitely worth it. Once you are accepted for the job, Chegg will match you with the right students – basically, according to your academic subject of expertise.
Here’s the exciting part, Chegg allows you to earn as much as $20 per hour, which is quite high compared to other online tutoring sites.
VIPKid is a Chinese-based ESL program that really pays well. However, the company is very particular when it comes to hiring English tutors/teachers. In fact, they are, I think, are one of the very few companies that have very extensive requirements and qualifications. The application process itself is very challenging but its worth it once you are in.
VIPKid specifically opens its doors to native English speakers, particularly from the US and Canada regions. They require a bachelor’s degree in English, and as well as compliance (or at least familiarization) to the US Common Core State Standards curriculum.
As a VIPKid tutor, you are expected to teach at least 7.5 hours per week. Not that bad, right? Here’s more, you get to earn between $14 and $22 per hour based on your performance, plus added incentives!
Here’s another well-known online tutoring platform that provides high-quality online tutoring services to students from all around the world at a very reasonable cost.
TutorVista is known to have more than 2,000 qualified teachers coming from across the globe. These teachers have their respective academic subjects of expertise like English, Grammar, Science, Biology, Math, Physics, etc.
TutorVista, however, is only open for those with teaching qualifications and experience. As the company’s tutor, you are expected to teach at least 4 hours a week!
Furthermore, as an online tutor, you can earn at least $10 to as much as $40 per hour depending on the different factors they consider.
So, there you have it! I hope I was able to share with you enough information about online tutoring jobs, its perks, and where you can find some of the great opportunities available.
If you are a stay-at-home-mom like me or someone who wants to earn extra money, this is definitely one of the best online work opportunities that you may consider.
