Transcription job is probably one of the most popular work from home jobs today, which is not quite surprising because compared to other home-based jobs, the requirements to be a transcriptionist is not as hard as others. Also, the job in itself – although it may seem challenging in the beginning, once you are used to it, it definitely is like a breeze.

Rev.com is one of the online websites that offer transcription job opportunities. The company hires people like you to be part of their pool of transcriptionists. Although it provides a number of transcription job opportunities, some people could not help but be wary about its legitimacy. Well, how can you not suspect when it advertises earning as much as $10,000 (or more) a month! Thus, we are going to investigate whether or not Rev and its promises are for real.

So, if you are eyeing to be a Rev transcriptionist, hang in there and let us see first if it is really worth your time and effort. To start, let us first check out what Rev is all about.

What is Rev.com?

Rev.com, formerly known as FoxTranscribe and FoxTranslate, is an online website that provides transcription job opportunities, as well as captioning services and translations for businesses. It provides work from home jobs for freelancers like you and pays out on a weekly basis based on the work you’ve done for the whole week.

Rev.com is based in San Francisco, California, and was founded by former oDesk.com employees namely, Jason Chicola (who stands as the CEO of the company) and Josh Breinlinger (co-founder) in August 2010.

In August 2012, Rev was able to expand the business through the help of Venky Ganesan of Globespan Capital Partners who funded the said company expansion.

The company has earned its popularity as it believed in giving people opportunities to work from the comfort of their homes and based on their availability. Needless to say, deliver top-notch service to clients.

Furthermore, Rev.com promises to offer nothing but supreme quality, speed, as well as value to its clients. They do so by making use of excellent and skilled people, and the use of technology to deliver expectations.

If you are interested to be part of the company as a Rev transcriptionist, all you need to do is fill out the application available on their website, and take and pass the test they will give you. Later on, we’ll discuss the application process further.

Who uses Rev.com?

There are two groups of people who use Rev.com. On one hand, one of these groups is the businesses that need people to do translation, transcription, and caption work. This group is those who are too busy with a lot of things that they do not have time or people to deal with these kinds of jobs.

Through Rev.com, these businesses get to have the work done at a very minimal cost compared to hiring their very own freelancers to do it for them. With the help of Rev.com, these businesses are definitely able to save time and money.

On the other hand, the second group refers to the people who are looking for work from home transcription job opportunities. Through the company, you can work as a Rev Transcriptionist, translator, or caption writer.

Rev.com is ideal for those who have other things to do on their day to day lives – as the company offers a very flexible work schedule, as well as when it comes to the amount of work you need to do. Yes, the company gives you to freedom to choose how much load of work you will work on or how light.

In fact, a lot of people rave working as Rev Transcriptionist because unlike other transcription companies, it does not require minimum hours or amount of work you need to accomplish either in a week or a month. It all totally depends on you.

When it comes to payment, which we will discuss further in a while too depends on the length and the difficulty of the project you are working on. As with the payment, you get paid by Rev on a weekly basis through PayPal.

Some of the basic qualifications are:

– Efficiency and accuracy in doing the job

– Posses fast typing skills

– Possess excellent communication skills (grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc. included)

– Transcription job experience preferred but not required

– College degree is preferred but not required

Moreover, you need to possess the following technical requirements:

– Excellent and dependable laptop or desktop computer

– High-speed internet connection

– High-quality headset

– Foot pedal (this is not required, but if you seriously see yourself doing transcription job for long, you better invest in this device – it totally rocks!)

So, there you have it. As long as you have these with you, you are ready to start your transcription career at Rev.

What is Rev.com’s application process?

As we promised, we are sharing with you today the application process on Rev.com. For sure, a lot of you are wondering how the application process goes.

First thing though, unlike other transcription services companies, Rev.com accepts applications from anywhere in the world, which means, whether you are from the United States, Canada or anywhere else, it does not matter. You are totally welcome to send your application to be a Rev Transcriptionist.

Unlike other transcription companies, Rev’s application process is known to be very strict. As we said earlier, the company filters its freelancers, making sure what they have are the bests. In fact, only 20% out of those applying to be a Rev Transcriptionist get accepted. Even transcribers who have been one for years find Rev Transcription application process really challenging. Now that is really tough!

But don’t get discouraged just yet! Who knows? You might just be one of the 10%! Never lose hope!

Now, to give you an idea about Rev’s application process, we will go through the different areas that you will need to go through. Just for your information, the testing phase will take about 60 minutes to complete. The test, by the way, is available on their website. All you have to do is enter your name and email address, and then, hit the start your application button.

Applicants will be assessed on the following areas:

– Typing Skills

This process will test how fast your typing skills are. You are given 60 seconds to do typing. You can type as much as you can within the said period of time.

We highly suggest that you type as much as you can. Maximize the time allotted. But, at the same time, also ensure that you are accurate.

– Grammar

Of course, like in any other application process, your grammar skills will also be put to test. But don’t worry, this one’s a simple test. The purpose of the test is to check – apart from your grammar skills – your punctuation and capitalization skills too.

If you are confident about your grammar skills, there is nothing to worry then.

– Transcription Test

Among the three areas of the application process, this is the main point. What will happen is – you will be given an audio test that you will need to complete using Rev’s transcription editor. Good thing is, there is no time limit. Thus, you can take your time in doing the test.

This test will give you an idea of the kind of file you will be expecting once you are in. The file that will be given to you to work on is the very same kind of audio file that you will be handling on a day to day basis once hired as a Rev Transcriptionist/

The audio file comes with multiple speakers. Make sure you do well doing this test as Rev pays attention to how you transcribe the file, at the same time, they will check how well you get to identify the speakers on the file. They will check your ability to decipher what the speakers are saying.

Once done doing the test, hit the submit button. Immediately after, you will receive an email thanking you for taking the time to take the test.

In about 1-2 days, if you were able to pass the test, you will receive another email. As with those who did not make it, it normally takes 45 days before they send you an email informing you of not passing the test.

Once the tests are done, and you passed them with flying colors – as they say, you will now have to “Complete Registration” process. Once you hit that button, you will be directed to Rev’s Workplace platform. There, you will have to sign a user agreement, then you may click the Library for a few housekeeping rules that you need to know before you start working on projects or files.

How to earn of Rev.com?

Of course, the very purpose of it all is earning money! Thus, it is only right that we talk about how to make money on Rev.com.

As we have already said a couple of times, you get to make money through Rev by being either a transcriptionist, translator, or by doing caption work. The company pays out on a weekly basis via PayPal based on the load of work you have done the entire week.

While there are so many things to love about Rev, what we find really beautiful is the fact that it opens its doors to those who do not have transcription work experience. Yes, they are open to hiring newbies as long as they pass the application process.

Early on, we already mentioned about the different tests that you will need to go through and pass to be able to get in as Rev Transcriptionist.  Once done, you will need to wait for a few days for the result. If you pass, you can immediately start working. If you fail, you can reapply again after 6 months.

Rev lets you decide what particular job you want to pursue, which is nice. They let you decide based on what you are most comfortable at.

You know, we were thinking, although the process of getting in on Rev is quite challenging, it’s rewarding, in the end, knowing that you get to decide when you want to work and how much work you want to do. The company does not have a minimum number of hours or tasks that you need to complete in a certain period of time. It is so flexible that they let you decide about that. Of course, if you want to earn more, all you need to do is work on more files for long hours a day. Otherwise, you can do little and earn little as well.

The company does not require you to do work every day or every week. In fact, if for instance you are done working now, and say you are going on a vacation, you can always delay working again to the next month! To be honest, we think being a Rev Transcriptionist is one of the best work from home options for stay at home moms. There is no pressure at all! Mom can do work only on certain times they are free to do so.

One more thing we like about Rev is the fact that the audio content, job subject, how much you will earn, and the deadline is available or displayed so you get to decide which ones to work on. Don’t you just find that really amazing, right? Who would have thought transcription life could be this easy? No wonder why there are people who get to earn more! You know, the secret toward earning big bucks on Rev is getting the higher paid files. Getting a lot of them translates to more income, right!?

Although, for newbies, you will have to start as a Rookie first, which basically means, you are at a level that only allows you to work on shorter transcription projects, which ranges from 1 minute to 30 minutes long files. It’s an actually good way to practice your transcription abilities until you get the thrill of the work.

Eventually, you will reach the next level, which is Revver. On this level, you will have the freedom to work on any job you want to work on. Now, to reach this level, you will need to transcribe at least 120 minutes and have accuracy and formatting ratings of 4.5. In addition, you will also need to be 75% on-time submission and you must have a commitment ratio of 8.

But it does not end there. The topmost level is called Revver+ which allows you to get projects 90 minutes earlier than Rookies and Revvers, which allows you to choose easier tasks to complete. If you want to get to this level, you need to meet a certain requirement – that is to transcribe at least 1,200 minutes with accuracy and formatting of 4.6, comment ration of 15, and a 90% on-time submission.

As mentioned a while ago, payments differ on the type of job you are doing, the difficulty of work, and the length of time needed to get the job done.

Based on some freelancers on Rev, you can earn $0.40 to $0.65 per audio minute, which means you are likely to earn $24 to $39 per hour. Payment are given every Monday via PayPal. So, if you want to pursue a transcription career with Rev, make sure to set up a PayPal account first.

Apart from all these, Rev also ensures you get to improve your craft by providing transcription tutorials, practice jobs, as well as constructive feedback from their pool of professional transcriptionists. In addition, the company also has an active forum and a support team that their freelancers can ask for help in case they have questions.

Is Rev legit or a scam?

Based on the information that we gathered and the reviews we saw from its current and former freelancers, Rev.com is indeed a legit site for freelancers particularly for those who want to pursue a transcription job.

Just like any other companies, it’s not perfect. It has its own flaws and something to not like about. Thus some people have complaints on the company. However, the good thing is, nothing is related to payments – meaning, no complaint was made about receiving payments. Also, the company stays true to their promise of paying you based on the amount of work and the difficulty of work that you do.

Final Thoughts

Although there are some people who doubt the legitimacy of Rev.com, based form what we gathered, we can say that the site is actually true to what they say. They don’t promise just for the sake of doing so, but because it is achievable if the person is hardworking.

So, if you are one of those who want to be a Rev Transcriptionist, all we can say is, go ahead and submit your application. There is nothing to worry about not getting paid because the company does pay according to what you have accomplished.
