When it comes to period panties, there are three brands that are battling it off – it is Thinx vs Modibodi vs Speax. The question is, among these three, which is the most ideal one?
Women are not spared from the monthly period (unless you are menopaused already). Each month we go through the same thing – cramps, cravings, bloating, and of course, dealing with the messy thing all at the same time.
Let’s be honest here if only we can get rid of all these, we would. But that is what our bodies are made of – and we have to deal with it (including all the inconveniences it brings) whether we like it or not.
But time has changed. Well, thanks to innovations and people who continue to create solutions to problems and concerns – including the inconveniences of monthly periods.
With all the new innovations being developed, there is now a way to go through the monthly period sans the inconvenience and discomfort, at the same time, resolving environmental concerns. More so, innovations include freeing women from worried about having leaks as well as preventing the unsightly mess from happening.
Yes, we are talking about period panties!
The concept of period panties has always been around – but it has never been as good and as efficient as the new ones in the market today. In the old days, when we talk about period panties, we basically are referring to granny panties – the ones we wouldn’t mind ruining with leaks and other things caused by menstruation.
Well, let’s admit it, granny panties are not all pleasing. It doesn’t look good, not even feel good when worn.
Perhaps having this plus all the other inconveniences and discomforts in mind, Thinx, ModiBodi, and Speax were born. These companies/brands existed to change women’s ideas of period undergarment. Needless to say, show you new products developed not just to help you go through a worry-free monthly period, but to blow your pants off because of so much convenience and comfort.
Before we compare Thinx vs Modibodi vs Speax, let us first talk about the importance of period panties.
PERIOD PANTIES: WHY WOMEN NEED THEM
We know what you are thinking – why in the world do we need period panties when we already have regular panties, right?
Well, period panties, we must say, is totally different from regular panties. It gives something that regular panties cannot.
But what are period panties really?
Well, period panties refer to the underwear that we, women use during our monthly period. These “panties” are made using special fabrics to help absorb discharge, as well as to keep them away from your body, at the same time locking the moisture in the fabric itself.
Period panties are leak-resistant but are also breathable. While you may think it’s amazing magic, well, it’s actually just science at work!
Just so you know, the fabrics used for period panties are actually not new. In fact, it has been around for some time now. These fabrics are the very same fabrics developed for disposable diapers. But just like any other products in the market, it took a while before period panties were introduced.
It took a lot of trial and error before manufacturers get them in the right combinations and blends to ensure these are reusable products – needless to say, products that do not harm the environment.
Although most women use period panties to spare their pretty knickers from a potential mess, these products offer more than just sparing women from a mess.
It’s quite amazing how Thinx, ModiBodi, and Speax can eliminate the need for using pads, tampons, as well as menstrual cups – of course, depending on how heavy your menstrual flow is. If you come to think about it, menstrual panties spare you from stepping in your Shark Week routine and just like regular days – allow you to jump right into undies.
More so, wearing these reusable panties helps reduce your environmental footprint. Yes, it’s definitely healthy for the environment! If you want to help get rid of additional trash in the world, using reusable panties or period panties is the key.
On the contrary, some women use period panties as back-up protection on top of other traditional feminine products – especially when there’s a need to wear white clothes.
Wearing period panties make women more comfortable and worry-free. Also, it allows you to dip a toe into free bleeding movement without having to fear of leaks and all that.

PERIOD PANTIES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In an article published by Cosmopolitan Magazine, it particularly mentioned seven things women did not know about period panties, and these are:
The magic of the period undies is in the layers.
Unlike regular underwear, period panties were made and are specifically designed for menstruating in, thus, it comes with multiple layers.
You’ll want to look for a pair that fits just like normal underwear.
When choosing a period panty, all you need to ensure is that it fits on you comfortably. No need to worry about sizing up or down. The moisture-wicking and the antimicrobial layers will keep you protected from moisture and yeast.
The absorbency depends on the style of underwear.
Just like how tampons and pads come in different absorbencies to fit every woman’s needs, so does the period panty.
You’ll want to look for a pair that’s all fabric.
There are some period panty brands that use plastic lining on the exterior to keep it waterproof. It is, however, highly recommended to choose an all-fabric made period panties to avoid musty environment.
You might have silver in your undies.
Some brands such as Thinx use antimicrobial silver in their fibers, which is very helpful in fighting off bacteria as well as unlikely odor.
If you want to keep your laundry clean, do a pre-wash in cold water.
Before using period panties, experts highly recommend rinsing them in the sink or shower first. Most period panties can also be machine washed. To be sure, check the label.
Investing in period undies does good for women in need too.
Apparently, some brands have giving back programs. For instance, in 2017, Thinx gave more than $260,000 and 5,700 pairs of underwear to organizations working to end poverty. Meanwhile, Modibodi has its “Give a Pair” program wherein customers can buy “virtual pair” vouchers and Mobidobi donates two pairs to women’s shelters all over Australia where the brand is located.
THINX VS MODIBODI VS SPEAX: BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW OF EACH PRODUCT
Now it’s time to dig deeper into each brand. Let’s get to know more each company and what they offer when it comes to period panties:
When it comes to period panties, Thinx is considered as one of the biggest names in this industry. Back in 2014, the brand tried to break the usual thing on menstrual products by introducing cute, sleek, and modern underwear — which is totally different from what period underwear usually are.
Unlike other brands, Thinx offers a wide range of panty styles using different materials with different absorbency levels as well.
Thinx’s Classic period panties have the ability to handle up to two regular tampons’ worth of fluid or 10ml to be exact. Meanwhile, Thinx’s Super products can handle up to four tampons’ or 20ml worth of fluids.
If you are allergic to certain types of fabrics or you want the comfortability of wearing organic cotton underwear, Thinx sells a line of period panties that are made from all-organic cotton. They also offer an ultra-thin line, which is called Thinx air — this one’s ideal when using tight pants or shorts.
To help keep women stay fresh and dry, Thinx uses a patented design that is made from four layers of fabric — each having a specific purpose, which include: moisture-wicking, odor-controlling, leak-resistant, and the last layer to keep it all together.
Just so you know, this kind of technology is actually present in both the brand’s underwear as well as activewear.
Just when you thought it’s over, Thinx also applies non-migratory silver, which is great in controlling odors and also helps keep bacteria from spreading. With that, Thinx will definitely help you keep your freshness all day long.
Modibodi is a brand that comes from the Land Down Under, Australia!
Its founder, Kristy Chong came up with the idea of period panties after giving birth and experiencing bladder leak problems. Going through such ordeals led to the birth of Modibodi.
Chong started developing the product back in 2013. It took a while before she was able to come up with a patented product though. But everything paid off because today, the brand does not only offer underwear, but also shapewear, swimwear, activewear, and maternity underwear.
Compared to Thinx and Speax, Modibodi offers the widest range of sizes. They do have 3XS up to 6XL. When it comes to absorbency, they have moisture-wicking up to heavy overnight — which basically is the same as Thinx (capacities ranging from 210ml to 20ml).
Just like Thinx, Modibodi also uses multi-layer fabric technologies, which is called as Modifier and Modifier Air Technology for their period panties. Their products come with two to three layers of fabrics depending on the kind of absorbency the wear is designed for.
To give you an idea, Modibodi uses different fibers in their products. This includes merino, nylon, bamboo, and of course, microfiber. These fibers are used in different parts of their products.
Furthermore, the brand offers more shopping options by having a variety of products like vegan, seam-free, and curvy lines, which helps cater to the different needs of women, as well as their respective preferences.
In addition, Modibodi also sells breastfeeding singlet, which is ideal for new moms who may experience breastmilk leaks.
Previously names as Icon, Speax is another brand that is popular when it comes to period panties. However, it is technically marketed as pee-proof underwear rather than period panties. If you are wondering why, well, it’s because Thinx, its sister company is the one taking care of “period panties”.
Now, since Speax is made by the same parent company, it also utilizes the same kinds of fabric technology used in making Thinx. In fact, experts and users found panties from both companies as very comparable except its absorbency levels.
Unlike Thinx, Speax can absorb double the amount that Thinx period panties can. It can hold up to 8 teaspoons of fluid or about 40ml. This is most likely because of the urine flowing at a quicker rate, and also in more volume compared to a menstrual fluid. We are unsure though if Speax and Thinx are interchangeable. Nevertheless, they both offer really great products.

THINX VS MODIBODI VS SPEAX: CUSTOMER REVIEWS
When it comes to judging a product, nothing beats looking at reviews made by people who have already tried them. In this case, here are some product reviews based on women who have tried using Thinx, Modibodi, and/or Speax:
I’ve struggled with tampons and pads my whole life due to medical reasons. With this underwear I almost forget I have my period. They’re just like putting on a regular pair of underwear and are just as comfortable. These have been life-changing. Only being able to wear pads restricted how I could move, what I could wear, and made me worry about getting stains…but with these, I know I’m protected.
I also feel surprisingly dry. I highly recommend them. I’m able to wear whatever I want and not have to worry about seeing a pad through my clothing. I came to the realization that a lot of my discomfort during periods was from tampons or pads and felt that it was something I had to live with. I’m so glad I gave these a try and was able to resolve this issue and I hope someone reading this will give this underwear a try for themselves. Also, I love wearing them to bed because I don’t have to worry about which way I’m laying or if I’m going to stain my sheets!
– Joy N. (Review Published at Amazon.com)
I love this product. I ordered light to moderate and the heavy pair to try out. They fit great and absorbs well. No smell either. I do spray an enzyme spray (or vinegar) on them and let them sit for a little bit just to be safe. The heavy pair has the protective band going the whole way up the back of the underwear, so there are no worries at leaking at night.
The lighter pair doesn’t go as far up but makes it more sleek for day use. There is no rustling when I walk either. I got them to use with a menstrual cup, but I am wearing just them on my light days. Super happy I found this product, it makes my periods less stressful; I don’t have to worry about leaking or finding a toilet in a hurry!
– Zach (Review Published at Amazon.com)
These have worked great, especially for long days of travel. We fly frequently and I have always worried about long airport walks and lengthy flights. No more. Plus, right now I have a horrible cold and they have worked wonders for those surprise coughs and sneezes.

THINX VS MODIBODI VS SPEAX: THE VERDICT
To be honest, it’s had to tell which one among the three brands are the best because they offer different features. When it comes to price points, they are basically almost within the same range.
But just to run down some of the things we were specifically amazed of per brand, here are our thoughts:
When it comes to overall accident protection, we recommend getting Speax. If you want more size options, and if you have allergies or dietary needs, you go for Modibodi. Now, if you are not decided which one to try out, we recommend getting Thinx first.
But really, at the end of the day, you be the judge — because we all have different needs and body types as well as preferences. Whatever works for you, works for you. While it may also work for some, most likely it won’t work for the others.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON THINX VS MODIBODI VS SPEAX
It’s amazing how technology works even in the most unexpected kind of product. Well, who would have thought that innovations will be made and period panties will exist, right?
