9 Flexible Tutor Job Online For Stay-At-Home Moms

Work From Home Jobs

Are you a stay-at-home mom who’s passionate about teaching? Do you want to pursue your passion by getting yourself into tutor job online? If your answer is yes, well then, this one’s for you. Read on as we share to you different online websites that offer online tutoring or teaching jobs.

I have a friend who used to teach until she became pregnant with her firstborn. She had to quit her job first because of pregnancy complications, and then eventually because both of them (she and her husband) thought it’s best for their baby that she takes care of her.

Though she loves her child dearly, she cannot help but feel sad about leaving her teaching job. Well, I totally get her as I too had to leave my career to become a fulltime mom. I knew how she felt. While it feels fulfilling to be able to take care your child and witness all his or her milestones in life, you can’t help but feel a little jealous of other moms who are able to get the best of both worlds.

Well, that was then. Because recently, she too, well, both of us, are already enjoying the best of both worlds too! Well, I have to say, even better! Why? Because we get to do work right at the comforts of our home.

How did that happen? Well, have the technology to that for!

Thanks to technological advancement, remote jobs became feasible! My friend is now enjoying her tutor job online, while I focused on blogging. Well, I actually did online teaching too before. In fact, it was one of my first online jobs. But you know, as you go along, you eventually find your niche.

Anyway, that said, I thought of sharing some of the best sites where you can apply for a tutor job online. I felt like I owe it to other moms out there who like us, also wants to continue doing their passion while being a fulltime mom at the same time.

But first…

Why become an online tutor?

Well, apart from the fact that you get to earn a decent amount of money in an hourly rate, and also, you get to make use of your spare time at home while your kids are asleep or are busy doing something else, you also get to impart something to your students.

You know, as a teacher, you get to make an impact on the lives of your students. It feels good. I can tell, because to this day, some of my former students would still message me to say hello or that they miss our classes.

Personally, I would have to say online teaching and traditional teaching are just the same when it comes to making an impact on a child or your students. It’s such a noble job really.

On a more practical note, unlike other online jobs out there, online tutoring or teaching allows you to take hold of your class schedules. You can decide which classes to take and which ones not to take.

How does a tutor job online work?

It’s basically like traditional tutoring but in an online setting.

Online tutors or teachers help out their student on a certain subject matter – it could be the English language or other languages, or could be typical subjects in school.

Depending on the online teaching company that you are part of, you could either interact with your students using Skype or other communication platforms with a video call feature. Some companies use their own communication tools.

Online tutorials happen in a one-on-one setup. The ratio is one teacher is to one student.

As an online teacher, as I have mentioned earlier, you have the prerogative to choose your class schedule, which makes it a very ideal job for stay-at-home moms.

What are the requirements for the job?

The requirements vary from one online teaching company to another. Some may require you to have an educational background on the subjects that you want to be an online tutor on. Some companies require their teachers to have teaching experience, some only consider those with a college degree, while other online teaching companies do not mind any educational background at all as long as you have the skills and the expertise on the subject matter.

With regards to the technical requirements for the job, typically, online teaching companies require their teachers to have their own laptop or desktop computers, a high-speed internet connection, and an excellent headset (some prefers the ones with noise cancellation feature). Also among the technical requirements are a good webcam – either a stand-alone webcam or a built-in camera.

How much money does an online tutor make?

Teacher rates depend on your expertise and years of experience. Just like any other jobs out there, the more experienced you are, the higher your rate will become.

However, normally, online tutors are paid on an hourly basis. Depending on the online teaching company that you belong to, you can get as much as $14 to $22 per hour. For your reference, a class normally lasts for about 24 minutes only. So in an hour, you can get 2 classes.

Also, again, depending on the company, some do have a minimum required number of classes in a month, while others are not that strict – allowing to decide how many classes you get in a day, a week, or in a month.

Now that you already have an idea about how online teaching works, it’s time to proceed to your most awaited part –

Where to find tutor job online?

As I have said earlier, there are a lot of online teaching websites out there. All you have to do is to choose which one fits you best.

I won’t say anything more. Let’s begin.

  1. VIPKid

VIPKid is probably one of those online teaching companies that have tough requirements when hiring online teachers. They are firm to only accept applicants who have the eligibility to work either in the United States or Canada. They teach American English, thus the requirements.

They also require a bachelor’s degree. Although not required, having English proficiency certificates like TESOL is a plus. They also require teaching experience regardless if it’s online teaching, traditional teaching, etc.

VIPKid caters specifically to Chinese kids aged 4 to 12 years old.

I personally recommend this to stay-at-home moms especially if you have the requirements. VIPKid is probably one of the most competitive when it comes to the hourly rate. VIPKid’s pay ranges from $15 to $22 per hour. They also give bonuses like when you are on time when you get a good number of student sign-ups when you teach 30 classes in a month, and other extra bonuses every month.

The hiring process is very easy but very nerve-wracking if I may say. Apart from sending your application, you have to go through a demo/interview process, and then a mock class – all with your interviewee acting like your kid student. They also do background checks to successful applicants. But once you get in, it’s definitely worth it.

What I also like about VIPKid is that the company treats their staff really well, and they are very open to listening to feedback.

  1. WyzAnt

With WyzAnt you have to the option to either do tutoring in-person or online. When it comes to the salary of their online teachers or tutors, I must say WyzAnt is no doubt one of the most generous online teaching companies. Why? Well, tutors on WyzAnt charges $30-$60 per hour and even more if you got years of teaching experience.

WyzAnt is known as a company that offers affordable, highly proficient private tutors in more than 250 subjects and test preparations. The nice thing about this company is they have a very efficient, very good customer service.

With regards to teaching or tutoring, you as a teacher sets your own hours, which again is a plus especially for fulltime moms because you get to decide your work hours. In terms of payment, WyzAnt pays quickly, which for me is another plus.

The only downside I see with the company is that teachers or tutors need to pay a 40% commission to the company in the beginning (although it eventually goes down as you stack up more teaching or tutoring hours) and there is also a 7% fee per client. Basically, when you start, you get like only about 50% of your total pay, which I think is precisely the reason why you need to charge high.

  1. Tutor.com

Unlike other online teaching companies, Tutor.com has very competent requirements. Tutor.com only hires tutors who are professors, teachers, adjuncts, Ph.D. students, as well as industry professionals who have the passion for their crafts and are very eager to help and share their expertise to the students.

With such requirements, it is not surprising that they also have a very tedious application process, which includes filling out of application form, taking an exam, and doing a mock class. Should you pass all these, plus the background check, you will immediately start working as an official tutor on their site.

Unlike other online teaching companies, Tutor.com only pays around $10.50 to $14 per hour, which is kind of low compared to the first two sites we mentioned earlier. With such very low pay with such a very high standard, it is not surprising why some people complain about it.

As with the working hours, like other websites, tutors get to choose their own hours.

  1. Preply

Preply is one of the leading online tutoring platforms that helps people from all over the world achieve their goals in a shorter period of time. The company offers tutoring jobs to anyone with expertise in a variety of subjects.

Like most online tutoring companies, Preply also lets you choose your schedule. When it comes to charging, you as a tutor gets to decide your price. To give you an idea, a lot of well-known tutors on Preply earns as much as $550 in a week! Well, that’s pretty big compared to other online tutoring websites.

What I like about Preply is that they are a really good company to work with. They offer great support to their online teachers, they offer flexibility, which I believe is very beneficial especially for fulltime moms planning to be online tutors. Also, you get to decide when it comes to the number of students you want to cater to.

What I find a little unfair though is that the company is that it takes a 100% commission fee on your first lesson payment with every new student. Then, for all subsequent lessons, Preply’s commission varies between 18% and 33% depending on the number of completed lesson hours with every student. I find the commission rate too much. Well, no wonder why their tutors really charge high because they have to include the commissions in their computation.

  1. QKids

Like VIPKid, Qkids also caters to Chinese children aged 5 to 12 years old. The company also requires their teacher or tutors to be a resident of the United States or Canada. The company also requires their tutors to be bachelor’s degree holders.

Qkids has actually a lot of similarities with VIPKids in terms of requirements and even the rates. They are almost the same range. Qkids pay their online tutors between $15 and $21 per hour.

Unlike other online tutoring companies, Qkids has very friendly and supportive staff. They offer flexibility when it comes to tutoring schedules and they have a very relaxed atmosphere when it comes to payments.

The only downside I see about Qkids is the early morning tutoring sessions. It may take a toll on the tutor if he or she does not properly manage it. Other than that, I have nothing else negative to say. It’s definitely a two thumbs up for me.

  1. EF Teach Online

EF Teach Online is another website that offers tutor job online. They also cater to teaching Chinese students how to speak English.

The company requires a college degree or higher in no particular field. As proof, they require submission of your diploma or transcript of records indicating that you are a bachelor’s degree holder. This document has to be submitted prior to sending you the contract.

Payment-wise, they are fairly competitive. Online tutors on EF Teach Online earns as much as $20 per hour.

Like other online tutoring companies, you also get to choose your own schedules, which again is a super plus among full-time moms. Also, another pro is that you get to have local support and payment in the US – apparently, other companies are based in China and not in the US.

  1. Kaplan

Kaplan, Inc. is one of the “world’s largest education providers”. In fact, the company is serving more than a million students and thousands of business, and university partners. The company offers higher education, test preparation, English-language training, professional education, as well as university preparation.

To get hired in Kaplan, you have to be a bachelor’s degree holder, and you have to have previous job experience related to the job you are applying for, which means, if you are applying for an English teaching or tutoring job, then you have to have previous English teaching or tutoring stints.

Kaplan pays between $17 and $38 per hour, which is definitely higher compared to other online tutoring companies. The rate of their tutors depends on the disciple, as well as years of expertise.

Kaplan also boats their very good support and training for their staff.

Unlike others that cater to tutoring sessions purely online, some Kaplan students may prefer face-to-face sessions, which means working outside your home.

  1. TutorMe

What is nice about TutorMe is that they have a very easy to use platform compared to other online teaching or tutoring companies. They also offer a very flexible schedule among its tutors, and when it comes to the pay, well, they fair enough with $16 per hour.

The application process is very simple. All you have to do is fill out their application form, you then select the subject or subjects that you are an expert of, and then, TutorMe will immediately start sending students your way! Very simple process, right?

Another plus for me is the fact that TutorMe pays out on a weekly basis.

The downside? Well, they have a quite low number of students. They need to do a little more marketing to attract more students. They also need to step up in terms of payments to be as competitive as other online tutoring companies.

  1. Gofluent

Unlike other online tutoring companies that cater to teaching children to speak English fluently, Gofluent caters to employees. They specifically help improve employee English communications skills, as well as their professional skills.

The pay, which ranges from $15 to $17 is quite low provided that they cater to companies.

However, the good thing about it is that you also get to choose your own schedule, you get to work from home, and you get to have really good technology, training, and support.

FINAL WORDS

See, mommies, there are so many options to choose from when it comes to online teaching or online tutoring. No doubt, you will never run out of options!

At the end of the day, it is really up to you. You get to choose, you get to decide which company best suits your interest, as well as your needs. Tutor job online opportunities are just there. Anytime you are ready to commit certain hours of your day to help out other kids or adults, all you have to do is apply and wait until you get hired.

So, what are you waiting for? Good luck, mommies! You can do it!
