Thanks to the digital age, more and more work from home voice over jobs are available these days. More so, the industry is growing, which means more work for professional and aspiring voice actors.
Have you ever received compliments for having a good voice? If so, have you ever thought of making a profit out of it by becoming a voice actor?
If you haven’t, well, guess what? You can make money from being a voice over talent! What’s more interesting is that today, there is so many voice over jobs for beginners from home out there, and who knows? If you take your chances, maybe you might just be the next most sought-after voice talent in the voice over industry! How does that sound?
We mentioned earlier that the industry is growing. We won’t be surprised if you will not give in to what we have said. However, we have proof that there is, indeed, growing demand for voice talents!
In an article published by Backstage, “the number one resource for performers to find work,” they have shared a few key information about the voiceover industry. These are combined data from both the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the United States Department of Labor and Statistics.
The data include:
First, there has been a “900 percent increase in the number of voiceovers required to be voiced” from 2014 to 2017.
Second, across the United States, there are “nearly 9,000 unions (SAG-AFTRA) voiceovers produced monthly“.
Lastly, the industry is very competitive because it takes an average of 200 auditions to be able to book a job.
You see, the industry is not what you think it is. It definitely is very competitive, and opportunities are rising, which is really good overall. Well, increased opportunity means more people are going to land a job, right?
What makes it even better is, just like a lot of industries today, voice over jobs from home is also increasing. More and more companies are opening up their doors to remote voice over talents, which again is good! This gives people opting to work from home (like work from home moms) more opportunities to explore.
Anyway, with all that has been said, the question now is, how does one become a voice over talent, and where exactly do you find a job to land a voice over job?
No need to look further because we are going to share with you answers to these questions and more!
But first –
WHAT ARE VOICE OVER JOBS ALL ABOUT?
Have you ever watched an animated film? Or have you heard of a radio series? How about an advertisement wherein someone narrates what the product is all about without showing herself on-screen?
The people behind those voices you hear on films or a product advertisement or over the radio are basically called, voice talents or voice over talents.
Voice work or also known as “voice acting” is basically as it is. The term used is very self-explanatory. Apart from commercials and films, voice work can also be done in television programs, audiobooks, video games, or even in a live event.
To put it simply, you are paid for “lending” your voice to any project that needs a voice.
Meanwhile, according to The Art Career Project, voice-over is “a type of off-stage or off-camera dialogue”. Voice over artists is usually called upon “to read scripts that provide information that cannot be deduced from the main action in a production“.
Furthermore, TACP says that this type of “voice art” is typically used as “a way to provide information during commercials and infomercials. It can also be used to add to the plot and storyline during productions, such as plays, television shows, movies, documentaries, and sports broadcasts.”
Typically, this is done outside the home particularly in recording studios. However, with the emergence of digital technology and software that can be used to make audios at its finest, voice work can now be done virtually.
Before moving on, if you are interested to get to know how to start a voice over or voice acting career, here’s a very informative video by Brizzy Voices, a popular YouTube content creator, and a voice actor herself.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A VOICE OVER JOB?
Apart from your voice, as a voice over talent or voice actor, you have to have excellent communication skills. You have to speak clearly and must know the proper pronunciation of words. Excellent diction and intonation are also highly required.
Also, since you will be working from home, at the minimum, you must have the following equipment:
- Reliable microphone
- Mic stand
- Recording/editing software
For the professional ones, especially those who have been doing it for a long time now or those who are serious about making a career out of voice over jobs, you may also invest in the following additional equipment:
- Preamp or pre-amplifier
- Acoustic Treatment
- Recording/editing software
If you want to further enhance your voice skills, many professional voice-over talents or artists recommend taking voice lessons. You may also consider taking acting courses or if you can afford, take an acting degree since most of voice over work is essentially an acting job.
HOW MUCH DOES A VOICE OVER TALENT MAKE?
It can be difficult to determine the average salary of voice over artists. However, generally speaking, more experienced and talented voice over talents make more than the new or aspiring ones.
Normally, voice talents, in general, are paid on a per-job or per-project basis. They make anywhere around $20 up to a couple of hundred dollars depending on the number of hours of work required or how extensive the requirement is.
To give you an idea though, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, radio and television announcers (who are also considered as voice talents) earn an average of $33,220 annual salary as of 2018. Meanwhile, actors make roughly $17.50 per hour’s work.
HOW TO BECOME A VOICE OVER TALENT?
Sure, you know now what voice over is all about, you have the basic equipment, and all that, but the thing is, are you really capable of being a voice over talent? Do you really have what it takes to be one? Are you really ready to compete with other voice artists in different voice over jobs?
If you are doubtful of your answer, here, we are going to share with you three ways on how to become a voice talent:
– Develop Your Voice Skills or Talent
Earlier we mentioned getting a voice lesson or an acting course. But what if you do not have the means to get one? Will you just throw away your dream or the opportunity to become a voice talent?
The answer is no.
You can still develop your talent by:
First, regular practice. Get your favorite book or maybe a magazine or a newspaper. Every day, you allot a time wherein you can read things out loud. Reading aloud effectively is vital in a voice acting career especially if the job has something to do with reading a teleprompter or a script. Spend at least 30 minutes of reading out loud.
As you read aloud, make sure you practice proper enunciation of words, as well as intonation. You may also consider changing the tone or sound of your voice.
Second, record your voice. Recording your voice is essential so you get to assess yourself if you are doing things right or you if there are rooms for improvement. It is also a good way to track your improvement from day one of practice. You do not need to have high-quality equipment in recording your voice. A recording app on your mobile phone is enough for the meantime.
Third, when reading, make sure to use your diaphragm. When listening to your recorded voice, take note also if you are using a nasal, chest, mouth, or diaphragm voice. The most ideal, of course, is using your diaphragm.
You get to attain that by practicing deep breathing, as well as making sure that your stomach rise and falls as you speak or read. If you know a voice teacher, she should be helpful in teaching you how to distinguish or how to use your diaphragm in reading or speaking.
Lastly, imitate the voices of your favorite actors or fictional characters. Imitating other people’s voice is not bad. In fact, it is a good practice as it helps build up your flexibility. It also helps you recognize pitch and tone, and give you a good material, which you can include in your demos.
But of course, while impersonating other people’s voice is okay, ultimately, you have to show your real voice.
Again, if you really want to take it seriously, the best way to do is to consider getting formal voice classes or training.
– Marketing Yourself
If you want to be considered for voice over jobs, you have to learn how to market yourself effectively. To do that, here are our recommendations:
First, make your own demo reel. A demo reel is a voice talent’s way of showcasing her talents when looking for voice work. Your demo real may be comprised of both your original work and imitations of famous celebrities’ or fictional characters’ voices.
Your demo reel is your key to landing a job or a gig. So, make sure that you only include excellent voice recordings in your demo reel.
Second, build up your resume. Of course, just like any other job, you need a comprehensive resume. Make sure, however, to include your voice gigs (if you have any) in the past so potential employers would know that you have previous experience in this field. Experience is a sure advantage.
Third, build an online portfolio. This is a must if you are looking forward to landing a home-based voice over job. Having a strong online presence can help jumpstart your voice over career. You may either use LinkedIn or the best way is to create your own website. You can use free blog sites to avoid fees if you want.
– Audition or Send Your Application Online
As we have said, there are a lot of online sites/companies that are looking for work from home voice talents. In order to land a job or a gig in any of those, the most important thing to do is to audition or send your application, which is what we are going to talk about next.
